Hop on the Yellow Brick Road this week with Lincoln Elementary School’s sixth grade production of “The Wizard of Oz.” The show opens Wednesday March 28, and will be playing through Saturday, March 31.
Director, Claire Ratfield, a veteran teacher at NMUSD, has been in charge of school plays in NMUSD since 1979. According to Ratfield, all 81 sixth graders have “worked tirelessly to make this year’s production a great success.” And promises, “Everyone coming to watch The Wizard of Oz will be stunned at the level of sophistication in the acting, singing, and dancing they will see on stage.”
Lincoln parents, Angela Caliger, Erin Hurray, and Gretchen Sheppard are co-producing the show along with the PTA and dozens of volunteers.
Parent Holly Lerner is thrilled for her sixth grader James. “For those children who have never performed or been on stage, this experience has opened up a whole new world for them.”
The entire sixth grade class is divided into two casts, each performing twice. When not performing, many of the students are working behind the scenes on the production of the show. Others have helped with marketing and advertising.
Natalie Kowal plays the role of Dorothy in cast one. She feels after seeing the movie and reading the book twice, she really understands Dorothy’s character. About the show, Natalie shared, “I was excited to learn along with my classmates that we all could sing and act so well. And the more we rehearsed, the more confident we felt on stage. The hours and hours of rehearsals and the dedication from our teachers, parents and the whole Lincoln community really make Dorothy’s famous words come true, There is no place like home.”
Dinner is available at the show and must be pre-ordered by Wednesday March 27. Choices include pizza, salads, and a veggie and hummus platter. Go to www.lincolnelementarypta.com to view the menu and order dinner and tickets.
